“Singularity” – Crazy Lace Agate Polished Specimen. 46.45 Carats, 30 x 25 x 5 mm. A uniquely engaging example of Crazy lace Agate. Crazy lace agate – sometimes called Zigzag Agate – is found most often in the Chihuahua region of Mexico, is often brightly colored and has a complex banding pattern.
Though Crazy Lace Agate is not uncommon, this particular specimen has an extraordinarily eye-catching degree of band irregularity (“zigzag”), as well as brighter coloration than many specimens, and the bands are of a finer scale than many other specimens as well; the bands of Crazy Lace often tend to be somewhat wider and coarser than what is seen in this specimen. The “nature painted” art of this piece is certainly singular – hence the name, which we provided – and inexplicably exciting.
The larger family called agate is a rock consisting primarily of cryptocrystalline (or microcrystalline)silica, and that family itself is within the Chalcedony family, which is composed of very fine intergrowths of quartz (silicon dioxide) and moganite. As such, agate is a sister ornamental rock to carnelian, sard, chrysoprase and prase, heliotrope, onyx, the subset category-named stone chalcedony (blue-gray), and others. Jasper is generally considered to be a close cousin to chalcedony, as well.
Greatly valued here by us, and unique in its face presentation, this example of Crazy Lace quartz does, indeed, carry a higher price tag here than similarly sized specimens of Crazy Lace agate. It is based, essentially, simply on what it would take for us to part with it.
