Description

New, and pristine. Guinness Swimming Record Relay – Enameled Pin – Ephemera – 4-11-1988. Something of a mystery. London: Guinness World Records, 1988. Irregular shape (see images), average length 1″, average height 1/2″. Pin and clasp fastener, as shown in image. Enameled in red, white, two shades of blue, and brown, on brass. During a cross-country fund-raising tour – done on roller skis in (apparently) the summer of 1988, the U.S. Olympic Cross-Country team presented this pin to host members of various chambers of commerce and other donating local business groups, at dinners hosted by those organizations. Venue for this one (mine) was the now long-gone Beefsteak Mining Company, at what was then called the Penn Can Mall in North Syracuse/Cicero. The mystery of the piece is twofold: first, it depicts a swimmer, not a cross-country skier; second, it honors an as-declared Guinness Swimming Relay World Record apparently set in Syracuse on April 11, 1988. I find no reference to any such thing, nor would I expect there to be. Please do feel free to enlighten me in any way, if you can. A great looking and interesting piece in any case, and almost certainly of maximum rarity. And quirkiness. Ships in stout protection, of course.
